Deloitte has had a long standing commitment to philanthropy. As you may know, New Profit and Deloitte recently renewed an annual multi-million dollar collaboration that has helped nearly 50 innovative nonprofits achieve scale and greater impact over the last 15 years. We are so pleased and proud of our friends over at Deloitte’s Monitor Institute. Nearly two years ago, the Monitor Institute—part of Deloitte Consulting’s new Social Impact Service Line—launched the What’s Next for Community Philanthropy initiative. The massive 18-month innovation and design process involved more than 200 different community philanthropy organizations across six continents and engaged more than 2,000 local leaders across the U.S. and Canada.

This initiative has resulted in a free, do-it-yourself toolkit for the field that includes a series of interactive exercises, essays, and even games designed to help community philanthropy organizations challenge old assumptions and generate creative new models for the future.

For the last 100 years, community foundations have been one of the cornerstones of American civil society, attracting donors and mobilizing resources to support local communities around the country. They now collectively hold nearly $65 billion in assets in the U.S. (as much as the Gates, Ford, Kellogg, and Rockefeller foundations combined).

But community foundations and other local organizations like United Way operate in an environment today that is radically different from the one in which many of their current practices and structures were developed. And it’s becoming harder than ever to keep pace with the changing needs of their communities.
