The New Profit community mourns the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Chris Herron, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on March 12, 2017. Chris' passion for social justice, his generous, collaborative spirit, and his sharp intellect and sense of humor were evident in all the work he did and the life he led. In his own, quiet way, he touched so many of us and left an enduring mark on our community.

The Family Independence Initiative’s new model for fighting poverty harnesses the power of families working together to find solutions that meet their needs. FII creates spaces for families from similar backgrounds and experiences to organize and come together to overcome economic hurdles, from earning high school diplomas, to finding new jobs or opening their own small business. FII families report on their monthly progress and FII uses that data to identify what’s working and invest in initiatives that help families lead more economically secure lives.

The Family Independence Initiative (FII) does away with the traditional top-down approach to helping people struggling with poverty. Rather than promoting a new program, service or intervention, our model sees families as the change agents, and we invest in them as well as the solutions they discover to overcome poverty.
New Profit has six active funds for supporting visionary social entrepreneurs and bringing them together with change agents from other sectors, including policy and business, to take on big systemic challenges. From early childhood learning to K-12 education, workforce development, and public health, we are pushing the boundaries of problem solving in collaboration with amazing partners.

The 12th annual Gathering of Leaders on March 23-24 was an extraordinary example of what can happen with honesty and collaboration, building upon the “Equity. Inclusion. Impact.” dialogue that we started last year. From the moving kickoff video to the heartfelt reflections at the end, we captured every moment. We're now excited to share with you the full videos from our inspiring sessions confronting the question that drives our work in this sector: How do we advance equity for all?
